“Berry Bandits” was created because I’ve always been captivated by the gentle charm and expressive personalities of the Gang‑gang Cockatoo. As an endangered Australian species, they hold a special place in many hearts, and I wanted to portray them in a way that celebrates both their vulnerability and their delightful character.
In this artwork, I’ve painted a pair of Gang‑gang’s perched among branches of a Hawthorn Berry tree. I love the contrast between the soft greys of their feathers, the warm red of the male’s crest, and the vibrant clusters of fruit. The moment felt playful and full of mischief—exactly the kind of natural behaviour that makes these birds so endearing.
That’s why I titled the piece “Berry Bandits.” It’s a light‑hearted nod to their cheeky habit of raiding berry bushes, and it allowed me to capture a story rather than just a portrait. My hope is that by showing these birds in a joyful, relatable moment, viewers feel a deeper connection to them and to the importance of protecting their species.
This piece reflects my ongoing passion for Australian birdlife, detailed realism, and art that carries meaning beyond the canvas.
Many thanks to Karl Paustian for graciously providing the reference photo as inspiration for this oil painting.
