“A wonderful bird is a Pelican
His bill will hold more than his belican
He can take in his beak good enough for a week
But I’m damned if I see how the helican”.
Quote by Dixon Lanier Merritt.
Pelicans are fascinatingly serene creatures who always appear to be self composed and quietly at ease with the world.
Percival was created as a labour of love during Covid isolation in Southern Western Australia. To me he was the perfect subject to work with at that time. As I got to know Percival he represented a feeling of self sufficient confidence. His shadow reflects the mood of a surreal phase in our every changing world. Strangely my attachment to this painting became quite philosophical.
