Every bird I paint earns its place in my collection for a reason. Some captivate me with their personality, others with their movement, and some simply stop me in my tracks with their colour. The Western Rosella captures all three.
Regular visitors to our backyard in Margaret River, the Western Rosella is truly unique to the south‑western corner of Western Australia. It is the smallest of the rosella species and the only one to display distinctive yellow cheek patches — a striking contrast to the white or blue patches seen in its eastern relatives.
“The Visitor” portrays a male Western Rosella, recognisable by his vivid red head, neck, and underbody plumage. In contrast, the female and juvenile birds wear a softer, mottled green, offering a beautiful variation within the species.
I am endlessly captivated by the beauty and diversity of colour these bird’s display. “The Visitor” marks the beginning of my series of Australian Rosella paintings, a body of work dedicated to celebrating each species in oils. My mission is to capture the complete rosella family with the depth, richness, and emotional presence that only oil painting can achieve.
Thank you to fabulous wildlife photographer Judy Walker for graciously providing the reference photo used as inspiration for this oil painting.
